1-The concept of the beast is introduced through chapter 2 where the littluns were scared of the presence of the beastie, Simon felt there was no beast and it was just a figment of their imagination.
” he saw the beastie, the snake thing, and will it come back tonight…he says in the morning it turned them into things like ropes in the trees and hung in the branches (36). “
There are many references to beasts in the novel. The concept is introduced in chapter 2 by a littlun. No matter how much Ralph attempts to assuage their fears about the Beastie, the group of boys still fear it. Simon discovers later that they are the Beastie.
2-While the intentions of the boys are initially good, they inherit evil in mankind begins to surface in the boys, after they light the signal fire for rescue,
” Ralph realized that the boys were falling still and silent, feeling the beginnings of awe at the power set free below them. The knowledge and awe made him savage (44). “
The fire that breaks loose on the mountain symbolizes the uncontrollable savagery that soon befalls the stranded boys. Just like the savage fire kills the boy with the birthmark, the boys’ savagery kills others.
3-The island was becoming cauotic, Golding forms conncetion between the charectars and symbols veiwing the leadership in the world. Ralph states
” We’ve got to have rules and obey them. After all, we’re not savages. We’re English, and the English are best at everything.” (2.192)
Golding belives that rules and regulations, law and order is an essential for working of a civilized society. If there are no rules or laws people will loose the fear of punishments and act as savages which would lead to destruction of the civilized society Golding was trying to form through his charectar Ralph. Golding also believes that the Englishman are civilized and are bound to obey laws.
4- There are no adults in the island to superwise the children or to look after them , the children are on their own fighting for their survival on the island. Ralph quotes
“There aren’t any grownups. We shall have to look after ourselves. “
The older boys, other than Piggy, are excited to be without grownups. As the story goes on and the situation deteriorates, Ralph and his crew wish for adult supervision.
5-Jack says that they should work on the part of getting resuced however at the same time Ralph decided they need a leader for governance on the island
” The toy of voting was almost as pleasing as the conch. Jack started to protest but the clamor changed from the general wish for a chief to an election by acclaim of Ralph himself “
Jack declares that, most sensibly, he should be chief because he’s the head boy of the choir and can sing a C sharp, which everyone knows will come in handy later when negotiating with foreign peoples.
Because they are good British boys who know how to follow parliamentary procedure, they decide to vote. Amazingly, they pull this off without the aid of an electoral college, and Ralph becomes chief. Ralph was elected as the cheif because he has stillness, is attractive, and most importantly has the conch.
