LORD OF THE FLIES CHAPTER 9 QUESTIONS
-Chapter 9 takes a sudden change on the island, they boys go from just being boys to become killer. Simon discovers that the so called beast of the island, in really nothing more than the body of a dead airman. His parachute had become tangled and stuck in the trees. Simon cuts the lines of the parachute and allows the body to slip away. He realizes that he has to go and tell the other boys that there is no beast.
- Jack has a very different leadership style from that of Ralph and he does not have the same concerns for rescue. Even though they do not like him, they are inexplicably drawn to him. Jack is clearly superior to his tribe, making demands on them and passing instructions to them. He gives the appearance of concern, making sure everyone has had sufficient to eat but his tone of voice indicates his control of the situation as “his tone conveyed a warning.” Jack relishes his power and takes an opportunity to rally and garner support for himself at a moment when the boys are full from eating and relaxed. He knows how to take advantage of a situation. Jack expects loyalty in return for the food he has just provided. Even though Jack has no respect for the conch, he is aware how powerful a symbol it is and its absence from the party gives Jack an opportunity to assert himself fully. Even when the boys become uneasy at the approaching storm and Jack’s inadequate shelters, Jack deflects the issue and encourages the dancing and chanting which he knows will ensure their loyalty to a “demented but partly secure society.”
-More fun and less work is what attracts the others and Ralph to Jack’s life. The boys also like being savage and playing horrific games that minimize the amount of responsibility they have.
- Jack orders the dance so he can gain ascendancy by tapping into the most primal and basest instincts in the mob. The dance, with it’s repeated chants of killing the beast, moved the group away from reasons and towards emotion and violence. It is an effective leadership tactic as groups are more often moved by emotion than logic.
-The chanting, hysterical boys call the body that stumbles out of the forest the beast, but it is really Simon. In their frenzy, they kill him. They are not individuals, but “a single organism. Simon suddenly comes out of the darkness and Simon is killed in an incredible violent torrent of spears, claws, and teeth. Nature’s fury complements the scene.
-the parachute flew away into the ocean because of the storm.
